I am excerpting from Sylvia's journals written in the 1860's.  Each week, I am mirroring the past with the present.  Along with Sylvia's words, I am providing historical and personal context.

I decided to begin in 1860 when Sylvia was 19 years old.  Since we are currently remembering the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, I thought it would be best to start right on the cusp of this event.  Great changes are about to occur and Sylvia will live through them all.
